The species is dedicated to the eminent Swedish lichenologist Leif Tibell who collected the holotype.
Type: New Zealand, North Island, Taranaki, Mount Egmont National Park, at North Egmont, along Veronica Walk, 39°16ʹS, 174°05ʹE, 990 m, on the thallus of Coccocarpia palmicola growing on a decorticated stump, 26 November 1983, L. Tibell 15036 (UPS F-857606—holotype).
