"Engel and Merrill (2010) recognized Plagiochila fuscella var. novae-zelandiae for plants with reniform leaves, teeth on the leaf margins, and thickened marginal cell walls. All these characters vary as a function of exposure. The number of marginal teeth also varies within and among specimens."
