Chiastocaulon proliferum occurs in New Zealand and Australia in cool-temperate rainforests, but does not appear to be common in either country on the basis of currently available herbarium records. In Australia, C. proliferum is known by a single mixedspecies gathering in Tasmania from a rotting log on the forest floor. In New Zealand, C. proliferum is often encountered in forest-floor or near-floor microsites, including rotting logs, tree roots and tree-trunk bases and lower trunks.
