There are still unresolved problems in the taxonomy of Sawadaea species. The identity of Sawadaea on Alectryon excelsus (Sapindaceae) in New Zealand, originally published as S. negundinis (Bradshaw et al. 2021), with sequences clustering in the S. bifida and S. negundinis branch, but somewhat distant from the core S. negundinis clade, remains unresolved and requires further research.
