QUEBEC: MRC (municipalité régionale de comté) Maria Chapdelaine, Parc national de la Pointe-Taillon, Lac Saint-Jean (48.6769, -71.847), on A. breviligulata, 3 Sep 2018, Z.- D. Wang & M. Liu Mliu193, and part of Mliu192 (DAOM 867492), Mliu191A (DAOM 867494), Mliu198 (DAOM 867493); on Calamagrostis sp., Mliu196 (DAOM 867495). USA. COLORADO: San Luis Valley Research Center, on P. arundinacea, 3 Mar 2017, S.A. Wyka clav35 (DAOM 867498). NEW ZEALAND. On Lolium perenne, 26 Oct 2017, J. Qiu clav53 (only DNA sample stored in Dr. Valmsi Nalam’s laboratory, Fort Collins, Colorado, USA).
All specimens on A. breviligulata, C. stricta, and P. arundinacea were collected from sand dunes along lake or river banks (Cayouette 2014), but one strain (Clav53) from New Zealand was labeled “on L. perenne,” which belongs to a grassland or seminatural terrestrial habitat. This remarkably different habitat and host is questionable but remains unconfirmed, since only preserved DNA samples were available for this strain (via SW). However, the production of soft sclerotia of various sizes coated with honeydew on H. vulgare, S. cereale, and T. turgidum by isolates DAOMC 251843 and 251845 suggests a potential for this species to infect plants in agricultural areas; however, many ecological factors could also prevent natural infection. The number of conidia on the surface of sclerotia seems to be dependent on sclerotial maturity. Newly formed sclerotia have many conidia on the surface, but upon maturity only few remains. Conidia of this species are variable, mostly oblongoid, broad oblongoid, reniform, ovoid, or limiform (which is different from C. quebecensis; see notes below)
CANADA. QUEBEC: MRC (municipalité régionale de comté) Maria Chapdelaine, Parc national de la Pointe-Taillon, Lac Saint-Jean (48.67667, −71.8733), on Ammophila breviligulata, 31 Aug 2014, J. Cayouette C10508A (holotype DAOM 550246). Ex-type culture DAOMC 251844. GenBank (DAOMC 251844): RPB2 = MH349064; TEF1-α = MH397456; easE = MH477771; easA = MH477824; tubB = MH477850.
