Growth on malt agar: After 3 days at 25°C. cells have the same shape and size as in malt extract. The cells are surrounded by a capsule. "Starch" is produced. The streak culture after one month at 17°C. is yellowish-brown, slightly wrinkled in the middle with a smooth and lobated margin. The culture may be mucous.
Slide cultures: Some elongate cells are formed, but no pseudomycelium.
Fermentation: Absent.
Sugar assimilation: Glucose +, Maltose +, Galactose +, Lactose -, Saccharose -
Assimilation of potassium nitrate: Absent.
Ethanol as sole source of carbon: No growth.
Splitting of arbutin: Negative.
