Cleistothecia were reported by Murray (1927) on the leaves of native broad-leaved and narrow-leaved bush-lawyer, Rubus squarrosus and R. cissoides, Rosaceae, Nelson, S.I., Apr. 1925. This fungus differs by its smaller cleistothecia (90-14O µm) and the shorter appendages (25-100 µm) in enough aspects from E. carpophila to raise it to species level. Dingley (1969) in the list of plant diseases in New Zealand does not give this record, but powdery mildew on bush-lawyer is obviously misidentified as Sphaerotheca macularis (Wallr. ex Fr.) Lind after a previous identification as S. pannosa (Brien & Dingley, 1955) without description of the organism.
